Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, EU Delegation to Ukraine, UNDP in Ukraine sign Letter of Intent

To intensify capacity building of the Ukrainian Parliament, to improve the quality of legislation and monitoring of its effective implementation, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine and the UN Development Programme in Ukraine signed the Letter of Intent on Friday.

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Andrii Parubii, who signed the document on behalf of the Ukrainian Parliament, noted that Ukraine is currently engaged in the implementation of reforms in different fields. He thanked the European colleagues and assured of success in view of the effective cooperation between the Ukrainian Parliament and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

He reminded that the Verkhovna Rada has proved its ability to work in a constructive way. He expressed hope that the cooperation with the European Union and the UNDP in the development of the Verkhovna Rada would facilitate the perfection of the parliamentary procedures, bring the Ukrainian legislation in line with the European standards, increase the transparency of work and improve cooperation with the society.

In turn Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Jan Tombinski said that the project aims to intensify capacity building of the Verkhovna Rada to let it elaborate quality legislation and provide control over its implementation. Mr. Tombinski expressed hope that the Project will facilitate the implementation of the Ukraine - European Union Association Agreement.

He noted that to work on the implementation of reforms, Ukraine needs operating, transparent and responsible legislature.

UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine Neal Walker expressed hope that the program of the parliamentary reforms and resumed international assistance would allow the Verkhovna Rada to meet the high hopes of the Ukrainian people.

Mr. Walker said that the Ukrainian Parliament already plays a key part in the bringing of the Ukrainian legislation in line with the best European standards and expressed confidence that it is the driver of the reforms in Ukraine.
