Members of Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations visit entry-exit checkpoint Mariyinka and town of Mariyinka during extended field meeting

Today, in the framework of an extended field meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations its members visited entry-exit checkpoint Maryinka and the town of Mariyinka.

People's Deputies - Committee Chairperson Hryhorii Nemyria, First Deputy Committee Chairperson Valerii Patskan, Committee Members Vasyl Brenzovych, Iryna Suslova and Refat Chubarov, and Members of the Committee on Social Policy, Employment and Pension Provision discussed with officers of the checkpoint the procedure of citizens of Ukraine’s entering and exiting the checkpoint and problems arising in this process, and talked with people crossing the checkpoint.

Committee Chairperson Hryhorii Nemyria pointed to the need to respect the rights and freedoms of citizens of Ukraine and thanked the servicemen for their work.

Entry-exit checkpoint Mariyinka, located on the motor road Kurakhove-Donetsk, began functioning on October 15, 2014. Distance from the contact line is 1.7 km. Every day, over 2,500-4,000 people and over 500-1,000 vehicles enter through the checkpoint, and 2,500-4,000 people and over 500-1,000 vehicles exit through it. For the period of its functioning from October 30, 2015 to March 14, 2016, a total of 384,692 people and 107,574 vehicles crossed the checkpoint under the due procedure.

The Committee members also visited the town of Mariyinka, talked to local residents and the leadership of the Mariyinka military civil administration, examined houses destroyed in shelling by the militants.

"I sympathize with the residents of Mariyinka as you have passed through hard times. We’ll try to do everything possible to help you," Nemyria said at a meeting with residents of Mariyinka, which was held in the framework of the extended field meeting.

Mariyinka has an area of 8.43 square kilometers. A total of 7,300 people remained in the town.

During the ATO, from July 11, 2014, a total of 78 apartments in 16 apartment buildings and 77 private buildings were completely destroyed in the town, and partially destroyed 311 apartments in 52 multi-story buildings and 689 private buildings.

During the period from July 11, 2014 to the present time, as a result of hostilities in the town of Mariyinka, killed were 41 peaceful citizens, and 53 residents were wounded. At present 986 IDPs live in the town.

In addition, today the Committee members met with the head of the Donetsk regional military civil administration Pavlo Zhebrivskyi.

Recall that on April 7-8 in Kramatorsk, Donetsk region, the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations holds an extended field meeting of the Committee dedicated to the monitoring of the protection of rights of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and citizens of Ukraine living in the area of the antiterrorist operation in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, and analysis of the practices of application of the current legislation regarding IDPs.

For reference: entry-exit checkpoint is a dedicated area of ??the checkpoint of the second border line within the road corridor with a complex of buildings, special, engineering, and fortification facilities where control agencies and services of Ukraine carry out control and give permission to enter the uncontrolled territory and exit it to persons, vehicles, cargo and other property.
