Present at the Meeting were all members of the Preparatory Group, representing the five political forces elected to The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the 6th Convocation.
The Deputies attending the meeting put forward several nominations for the position of Chairman, ie A. Martyniuk (CPU), R. Zvarych ('Our Ukraine People's Self-Defence' Bloc), and Yo. Vinsky (BYuT). None of the above Candidates was supported by a majority of Members. It was further proposed that the Chairman, Vice Chairman and Secretary of the Preparatory Group should be elected together. However this motion received no support from the Deputies present at the Meeting.
Following the debates, Olexander Turchinov of BYuT suggested that a member of the Party of Regions should be elected Chairman of the Preparatory Deputy Group. Ihor Sharov of the Lytvyn Bloc insisted on the immediate election of the Preparatory Group Leaders, and stated that he knew no reason why e.g. Olexander Yefremov of the Party of Regions, could not be elected Chairman.
The Deputies representing the Party of Regions asked for a break for consultations. After the break they nominated Valentyn Matveiev of the CPU, the reasons given that V. Matveiev fully understands the proceedings of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and its Standing Orders. They stressed that only this candidate would be able to organise the work of the Preparatory Group.
The vote indicated that V. Matveiev is supported by fifteen votes, whereas sixteen voices are required.
Following this, the Meeting was closed.
The next Meeting of the Preparatory Deputy Group will be held at 3 pm on Thursday l5 November.
