On Thursday 6 December, the Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, A. Yatseniuk, met with The President of the Republic of Poland, Lech Kaczyński.
At the beginning of this meeting, the Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine said he was looking forward to the further strengthening of Ukrainian-Polish relations, and revitalising of the bilateral dialogue.
The President of the Republic of Poland congratulated A. Yatseniuk on election to the position of Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, noting that this position 'is of extreme importance'. He said he believes that the newly-elected Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine will provide a consolidating influence in Parliament.
Several matters concerning the bilateral relations were discussed during the meeting. They also exchanged opinions on the internal political situation in Ukraine. The President of the Republic of Poland, said, inter alia, that he hoped a new Government would be created in Ukraine within a few days, providing new incentive for the development of Ukrainian-Polish bilateral relations, including those at Inter-Parliamentary level.
'Poland is deeply interested in maximising the speedy creation of a Government, and stabilization of the situation in Ukraine', stressed L. Kaczyński. 'We are hoping to extend our co-operation with Ukraine, a country which is Poland's important partner.'
L. Kaczyński. also stressed the support extended by Poland to Europe and the Euro-Atlantic aspirations of Ukraine. According to him, the Council of the Wise, being now set up in the European Union, as suggested by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, will recommend the consideration of the issue of a shorter timescale for Ukraine´s entry into the EU.
