“We should be conscious and attend to the problems caused by Chornobyl tragedy,” claimed Deputy Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oksana Syroid, opening parliamentary hearings “On withdrawing from service Chornobyl NPP and “Ukryttia” object, as well as prospects for the development of exclusion zone” on Wednesday.
O.Syroid mentioned that almost 29 years have passed since the Chornobyl tragedy and problems connected with it are no longer “that acute and obvious for the new generation”. Chornobyl tragedy has partially “merged into the background” today, due to military actions in the East of the country.
At the same time, said O.Syroid, current hearings during which it is planned to discuss prospects of “Ukryttia” object as well as the issue of functioning of affected areas, prove that “we realize and we are responsible to people who actively participated in Chornobyl aftermath mitigation; we realize what will happen to the future generation” since consequences of Chornobyl tragedy will be tangible long after it.
