Committee granted a hearing to the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine on the state of preparation of the draft National strategy in the sphere of human rights, elaboration of which was stipulated by the Decree of the President of Ukraine of October 15, 2014 No. 811/2014. According to the First Deputy Minister of Justice Nataliia Sevastianova, as of today the document, posted on the web page of the Ministry of Justice, is being publicly discussed. The Committee took the decision to hold hearings, following the results of discussion of the document.
Committee members attached attention to preparation of hearings in the Committee entitled: “State of observation of rights of internally displaced persons and citizens of Ukraine residing on the temporally occupied territory of Ukraine that is beyond the control of Ukrainian authority in the ATO zone”, scheduled for February 18.
“At present, strengthening of national security sometimes takes place at the expanse of human rights. But the state is not merely a territory, but rather people. We should secure observation of rights and freedoms of our citizens even under such complicated conditions,” stressed Committee Chair Hryhorii Nemyria.
Human Rights Commissioner in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Valeriia Lutkovska suggested introducing a procedure, under which the Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations shall consider each bill registered in the Verkhovna Rada on its compliance with human rights.
Yuliia Tymoshenko called on the Committee members and NGOs to address the Prime Minister and invite him jointly with specializing ministers to participate in the hearings. She stressed also the necessity of similar address to the President of Ukraine.
Committee Chair Hryhorii Nemyria informed about the meeting with international donor organizations and NGO “Right to Protection” pertaining to the problems of internally displaced persons.
