In her speech, the Chairperson of the Committee claimed "After all the developments of 2014 our country has changed. We have made our geo-political choice and are heading towards the EU. In these new conditions our children must be able to meet competition. We understand that they need foreign languages and knowledge of informational technologies; they will need a lot of new competencies that our traditional Ukrainian school does not provide. Therefore, we need to update school education and increase the length of studies".

Liliia Hrynevych presented a model of general secondary education elaborated by a working group which is preparing a new edition of the Law "On Education".

The model suggests:

- pre-school education up to 6 years;

- 5-year elementary school;

- general secondary education up to the 9th grade (up to 15 years);

- 3-year senior school which is subdivided to a school of academic orientation and a school of professional orientation.

Organizers of the round table were Presidium of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, Department of General Secondary Education and Institute of Pedagogy.

Following the results of the meeting, recommendations for legislative and executive authorities on amendments to educational legislation of Ukraine will be elaborated.
