The Committee Chairperson informed the guests about the Committee's legislative activity and about those changes the Ukrainian society is waiting for. "We are trying to conduct necessary reforms as soon as possible in order to minimize the period of uncertainty. Today we have to show the Ukrainian society that we are united when it comes to implementing such reforms, particularly, reforms of the law-enforcement system and adopting respective legislative initiatives", he claimed.
Director of Human Rights in the Council of Europe’s Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law Christos Giakoumopoulos upheld Ukraine's course towards implementing comprehensive reforms in all spheres, stressing the need to implement them in such a way so that there would be no gaps in time.
A.Kozhemiakin asked the Director of Human Rights in the Council of Europe’s Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law to help free people's deputy of Ukraine Nadiia Savchenko and all other prisoners of war with all possible means and to uphold the Resolution "On the Address of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the President of the Russian Federation on releasing Ukrainian pilot and people's deputy of the eighth convocation Nadiia Viktorivna Savchenko".
Christos Giakoumopoulos also noted the improvements in the human rights situation in Ukraine. However, he says some measures should be taken, particularly, conditions of the detained during pre-trial investigation and their medical care should be improved.
The Director of Human Rights in the Council of Europe’s Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law assured of his readiness to help Ukrainian legislators in elaborating necessary legislative acts, upheld the Council of Europe programme of cooperation with Ukraine in human rights sphere for 2015-2017 and expressed readiness to consider all proposals in line with the Action Plan.
The issue on implementing reforms of the prosecution authorities based on the Law "On the Prosecutor's Office" adopted on October 14, 2014, and legislative amendments were discussed at the meeting.
Participants of the meeting discussed prospects of establishing the State Investigation Bureau, current state of reforms of internal affairs authorities, and legislative initiatives on amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code.
