The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Ukraine Fan Xianrong.

At the beginning of the meeting, Ruslan Stefanchuk congratulated the Chinese delegation on the re-election of the country’s top leadership and conveyed an invitation to his Chinese counterpart to visit Ukraine.

He also thanked China and the Chinese people for the assistance, including humanitarian aid, that Ukraine has received during the full-scale war. He also expressed his gratitude to the Ambassador personally for the fact that in difficult times for our country, the Chinese mission in Kyiv continues to work, being able to convey the truth about the war with russia to his country.

“You have the opportunity to see with your own eyes that russia continues to violate all the principles of international cooperation, law and the UN Charter. And I sincerely hope that we can count on China’s continued support for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” the Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament said.

During the meeting, the parties discussed, in particular, the further role and actions of China, as one of the world leaders, to stop the bloody aggression.

“Ukraine is interested in putting an end to russia’s unprovoked war against our country as soon as possible. And China could play its role and convince moscow to immediately stop the aggression and withdraw its troops from the territory of Ukraine within internationally recognised borders. This will be a huge practical contribution of China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, to the restoration of peace and security in Ukraine,” Ruslan Stefanchuk stressed.

In this context, the interlocutors discussed an important initiative of Ukraine – the peace formula of President Volodymyr Zelenskyi. The Chairman of the Parliament of Ukraine informed his Chinese counterparts that the main points of the peace formula were confirmed by the UN General Assembly and the vote of 141 countries.

He also noted that Ukraine had taken note of China’s public presentation of its position on russia’s war against Ukraine.

“We welcome the public presentation of China’s position, given that some of its points coincide with the position set out in President Zelenskyi’s peace formula. So, I urge China to join the implementation of any of these points. For example, in close cooperation with the IAEA, Beijing could make a significant contribution to the implementation of the Nuclear Security clause,” the Chairman of the Parliament of Ukraine assured.

At the same time, he stressed that Ukraine is interested in continuing to maintain relations between our countries at the highest level, in particular, in strengthening and deepening inter-parliamentary relations, continuing the dialogue of the parliamentary committees on international affairs and parliamentary friendship groups.

The parties also discussed the issue of sanctions against the aggressor country. Ruslan Stefanchuk noted that Ukraine today has unprecedented global support in this war. This, in particular, is reflected in the imposition of economic restrictions against russia.

“russia is trying to find ways to circumvent these sanctions. Therefore, it is extremely important that China continues to maintain a policy of neutrality, refrains from helping the russian leadership circumvent sanctions and considers restricting trade with russia. After all, the sanctions are aimed at one thing: russia’s ending this brutal war,” Ruslan Stefanchuk called.

In conclusion, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine called on China to change its position on supporting Ukraine at the international level, where China’s voice is often decisive.

“China’s voice is very important for us in those issues that concern the UN General Assembly’s support for Ukraine.  This is a voice in support of many countries that also support the values for which Ukraine is fighting today, first of all, the values of sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country,” Ruslan Stefanchuk stressed.

For his part, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Ukraine Fan Xianrong assured the Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament that China has a peaceful and constructive position towards Ukraine.

“China is too big a country not to pursue a responsible policy. China has always been a peace-loving country. We want the world to have peace, stability, cooperation and great development. We believe that only in this way can China develop, and the whole world and other countries can develop. That is why our foreign policy has always been based on the principles of peace,” said the Ambassador.

He stressed that China adheres to the same principles in the issue of the war that is currently being waged in Ukraine.

“The only goal is to achieve peace to end the suffering of war every day. In our document, we have expressed a number of important principles related to a peaceful settlement. The most important of these are to respect sovereignty and territorial integrity, to respect the UN Charter and international law, to support all efforts aimed at a political settlement, against nuclear weapons, against attacks on nuclear power plants and for the continued functioning of the grain corridor,” Fan Xianrong said, adding that China will continue to play a peaceful and constructive role both on its own and together with the international community.

In conclusion, the Ambassador reiterated that China is ready to demonstrate its support for Ukraine at a difficult time for the country and to further develop the strength and unity of friendship between the Ukrainian and Chinese peoples.
