December 1 marks the 30th anniversary of the All-Ukrainian Referendum, in which 90.32% of citizens supported the Act of Independence of Ukraine adopted by the Verkhovna Rada.

“In all regions of Ukraine, the majority of citizens voted for independence, including in the Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions. And this should always be remembered,” Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Olena Kondratiuk stressed during the Conciliation Council of the Parliamentary Factions and Groups.

According to her, the referendum on December 1 consolidated the borders of Ukraine and made our state a full-fledged subject of international law. In particular, after the referendum, other countries began to officially recognize independent Ukraine. Among the first: Poland, Canada, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia and Russia.

"This referendum has become a real and so far the only example of effective direct democracy in Ukraine. I want to emphasize that it was the Verkhovna Rada, as an institution, that initiated this Referendum with the relevant Resolution. This is the wisdom and state position of the first convocation of the Verkhovna Rada: the desire to strengthen the legitimacy of Ukrainian independence,” said the Deputy Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
