The proclamation of Ukraine's state sovereignty was the result of a long struggle and a key step towards Ukraine's independence, which has been dreamed of for generations and has been pursued for centuries.
Today we feel the meaning of the word "sovereignty" especially acutely, because for more than seven years we have been forced to protect it from enemy encroachments. We pay an exorbitant price, losing citizens in the war in eastern Ukraine who defend our sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In 1990, the Verkhovna Rada made a bold decision - voted for the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine. And now, 31 years later, Parliament is also able to join forces to make important decisions in the interests of the state and for the benefit of its citizens.
