The Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Dmytro Razumkov assured that the Ukrainian Parliament and he, as its leader, would promote the rule of law and human rights in the state. Dmytro Razumkov said this during the Yalta European Strategy (YES) Forum.

Dmytro Razumkov noted that the COVID-19 pandemic forces certain restrictions and may pose a threat to human rights. “We need to be very careful not to cross the red line drawn by the Constitution, not to violate the constitutional rights and responsibilities of the people,” he said.

The Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada noted that one of the key achievements of Ukraine during the years of independence is democracy, which, in turn, cannot exist without the rule of law.

At the same time, the Speaker of the Parliament noted that it is important not to violate the rule of law when implementing the rapid changes required by the state.

“Very often we need to explain to people and to ourselves why we sometimes choose a longer, more complex, but exactly the right path. We will not be able to build a legal, democratic state in which human rights and freedoms will be truly respected if we do not do it ourselves, if the government goes the other way. It is possible to demand from the society respect for the law only by own example,” Dmytro Razumkov declared.
