The timely response of Ukraine's partners, including Lithuania, has helped stabilize the situation along the Ukrainian border during the recent escalation. This was stated by Chairperson of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Dmytro Razumkov during the meeting with Speaker of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania Viktorija Cmilyte-Nielsen.
“Recently, we have seen an escalation of the situation in eastern Ukraine, an increase in the number of Russian troops on the border with our state. The support of international partners, including Lithuania, in this issue was very important,” Dmytro Razumkov said.
At the same time, the Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament noted that this is not the end of the war and it is necessary to be ready for any developments. “But when you feel the shoulder of a friend, the state that always supports you, it helps and inspires in the struggle for the ideals that we have,” added Dmytro Razumkov.
The Chairperson of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine noted that strong friendly relations have been maintained between Ukraine and Lithuania for many years.
He thanked Lithuania for its support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and non-recognition of the annexation of Crimea not only at the bilateral level and in inter-parliamentary relations, but also on the international platforms.
He also thanked for the establishment of the platform for the deoccupation of Crimea in the Lithuanian Seimas, the adoption of the Resolution in December 2020 expressing support for Ukraine, and the preparation of the International Conference on Reforms in Ukraine, scheduled for July 7-8, 2021 in Vilnius.
“This is the result of our joint work. I am confident that it will develop further,” the Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada stressed.
During the meeting, the parties discussed issues related to countering Russian aggression and the danger of completing the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. “The absence of Nord Stream-2 deters the Russian Federation from intensifying aggressive actions on the territory of our state. Because today the only, main mechanism of gas supply to the European Union is the Ukrainian gas pipeline,” Dmytro Razumkov said.
He stressed that Ukraine is a reliable transit country for gas, noting that Nord Stream-2 is seen by the Russian Federation as a political rather than an economic project to put further pressure on both Ukraine and the EU.
The issues of Ukraine's European and Euro-Atlantic integration were also discussed during the meeting.
The Speaker of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania Viktorija Cmilyte-Nielsen assured that Lithuania supports this course. In addition, she stressed the strong support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.
