On May 19, 2016, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approved three resolutions Nos. 4691, 4085 and 3864 on renaming population centers in Ukraine. In particular, those resolutions renamed the city of Dnipropetrovsk as Dnipro, and the city of Dniprodzerzhynsk as Kamiyanske [city's historic name].

Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andrii Parubii noted that the people's deputies of Ukraine should have completed the decommunization of the names of Ukrainian population centers before February 18, 2016. Thus, he called on the parliamentarians to take a more active part in this process.

During the renaming of the million-strong city of Dnipropetrovsk, Parubii noted: "Dnipro has become one of the symbols of our resistance to the Russian occupation, Russian empire." He said that the Dnipropetrovsk's renaming will become a symbol of the respect to local community and history of the city.

"No population center in Ukraine will ever bear the names of those, who killed our grandparents and great-grandparents," the Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada said.
