On May 12, 2016, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine supported three Resolutions Nos. 4468, 4086 and 4087 on decommunization of names of population centers in particular, the ones located on temporarily occupied territories of Crimea and Donbas.
Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andrii Parubii, who initiated the consideration of these issues, noted that the Resolutions had been agreed with local communities.
Putting the draft resolution on returning historic Tatar names to the population centers in the Russia-annexed Crimea to vote, the Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada noted: "Today we have a unique opportunity to restore justice — to return historic Tatar names to the population centers in Crimea. The draft resolution envisions 75 recommendations offered by the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance and agreed with the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people."
Besides, Andrii Parubii reminded that on May 18, Ukraine will commemorate the victims of the genocide of the Crimean Tatar people. "Thus, today's voting was the tribute to the memory of the victims of repressions of the Crimean Tatars," he said.
The Speaker congratulated the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance and people's deputies on successful voting and thanked them for their well-coordinated work.
As earlier reported, the renaming of population centers is linked to the necessity to bring the names of geographic locations in line with the requirements of the Law of Ukraine "On condemnation of communist and national-socialist (nazi) regimes and ban on propaganda of their symbols."
