Attention was focused on the issues of legal reform in Ukraine. In particular, the process of improvement of judiciary and law procedures legislation as well as reforming the Criminal Procedure legislation was discussed.
The Chairman of the Committee informed Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Ukraine about the work of the Committee on the Rule of Law and Justice and generally about the course of judicial reform. He told about close cooperation between Ukrainian legislators and European experts on legal issues. He stressed that part of recommendations of European experts has already been realized. The Law “On Judiciary and Status of Judges” was amended, which helped to eliminate contradictions of some of its provisions with the European standards.
Apart from this, the Chairman of the Committee stated that the bill aimed at broadening the powers of the Supreme Court of Ukraine is under preparation in the Parliament. Serhiy Kivalov outlined also the role of the High Qualifications Commission of Judges of Ukraine and the Academy of Judges in training future arbiters of justice. "The Ukrainian parliament will work on amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code in the nearest future," Serhyi Kivalov said.
Attention was also paid to the future Constitutional reform. The Parties stressed the need to amend the Constitution of Ukraine for further improvement of the judicial system, which would establish the foundations of the system of justice in line with the recommendation of the Venice Commission of Ukraine and in line with the European standards.
