In the interview to Rada television channel on Friday, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine stated that Ukraine, Russia, and Europe should hold an open dialogue on energy issues.

V.Lytvyn stated that as far as supply of energy products is concerned, the authorities shall reach a common ground.

The Head of the Parliament believes that Ukrainian economy cannot afford a new price for gas since January 1, 2012, so it should be revised. "It is not the matter of flexibility or inflexibility of the Ukrainian Party. It is a matter of unreal price that calls for action," he stated. "Ukraine does not demand preferential treatment, but a single standard."

According to the Head of the Parliament, a present-say situation "calls for a well-grounded stand in the discussions between Ukraine and Russia." "There should be an open dialogue with the participation of Europe, and an open formula of price calculation which considers the specificity of every country," V.Lytvyn stressed.

"I hope that this ‘war of nerves´ will turn into a meaningful discussion. Negotiations demand arguments, as well as flexibility and willingness to reach compromise. Understanding of common responsibility is also essential," he said.

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine hopes that this approach will strengthen mutual trust, and Europe together with Ukraine and Russia will become a global player in the international arena, which is crucial for stability and balance.

The Head of the Parliament stated that construction of the South Stream will bear a negative impact on the budget revenue of Ukraine. "However, the countries cannot be denied the right to build their own gas pipelines," he stressed.

Along these lines, V.Lytvyn called on Ukraine to think how to use its transit capacities to the full.
