Mykola Tomenko: The Government shall not permit the Last Year Situation with the School Textbooks
M. Tomenko reminded that last school year was peculiar for numerous schools, teachers and pupils because of the lack of textbooks (since they were directed to schools only on April 2011 at the end of the year). He also reminded that as a response to his deputy inquiry, General Prosecutor´s Office investigated that Ministry on Science and Education "failed to provide appropriate fulfillment of obligations pursuant to the requirements of the Law of Ukraine "On Education" regarding publishing of textbooks for schools. "Namely the response stated that in 2010 in general the state order of textbooks publishing had lacked 171 thousand books, publishing of separate books was commenced only from the first September 2010. As a result, the necessary materials were delivered for pupils of 2, 5 and 10 forms with considerable delay.
"Unfortunately, this year the situation shall be an area of special control", Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is convinced. He announced that according to the information of the Kherson City Education Department, as of second half of August the city received only 11% from the necessary quantity of school textbooks for 11 form of schools with Russian language of education and 30% for 11 forms of schools with Ukrainian language of education. The same situation can be observed in other regions.
