Mykola Tomenko: Kyiv Authorities shall protect Shchekavytsia Mountain as a Symbol of the Ukrainian Capital
Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, addressed Kyiv authorities with a request to immediately investigate the situation with the destruction of Shchekavytsia Mountain.
In his appeal, Deputy Chairman emphasized that Shchekavytsia Mountain is a symbol of Kyiv, since it is a mountain of Shchek, one of Kyiv founders. He stated that its history is closely connected with the Kievan Rus, which makes it a holy symbol of the national Ukrainian culture. However, land-construction works have started in the territory of the mountain. New exclusive apartments or offices might be built there. M. Tomenko stated that local community and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on Culture and Tourism (chaired by Oleksandr Bryhinets) held numerous protest actions, but the Government and Kyiv authorities did not respond to them.
The Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada explains the lack of response by the fact that "they either despise the history of the Ukrainian capital or are afraid to contradict the high-ranking authorities who can be among the founders of new apartments or offices in the historical territory of the Ukrainian capital."
"Under any circumstances, Kyiv authorities, even if they have not been elected by the Kyivans, but appointed on the order of Viktor Yanukovych, shall investigate this matter and protect Shchekavytsia Mountain as a symbol of the Ukrainian capital."
