Threatening growth of extremism and radicalism in the Ukrainian society is critical and global.

Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, made the foregoing statement at the Council of Regions under the chairmanship of President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych on Friday.

The Head of the Parliament believes that ‘deep-seated problems´ in Ukraine bring this topic to the fore.

V.Lytvyn believes that the past is the first cause of this situation. "Our history taught us to follow a friend-of-foe principle, when friends are protected in any case, but foes are politically destroyed."

The second reason is that ‘Ukraine is territorially well cut, but badly sawn,´ which leads to the differences in the outlook and religion. The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine also stressed that people have different views on the foreign policy. He admitted that political parties and politicians are trying to put this matrix of their slogans, dividing the society and winning voters´ support.

V.Lytvyn also supposes that current economic situation instigates extremism. "It is difficult to explain that this situation is due to the global financial-economic crisis and recent political confrontations in Ukraine," he admitted.

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine stressed that political goals in Ukraine are often achieved by deliberate aggravation of the social situation. He claimed that they play on people´s feelings to get more votes. "The events of May 9 in Lviv clearly demonstrated extremities from the far left and the far right forces," V.Lytvyn stated. He emphasized that people want to have stability and predictability. "However, politicians and political parties have learnt only one strategy to act under the conditions of a conflict. When the situation is stable and predictable, politicians are at a loss and provoke confrontations," the Head of the Parliament summed up.

V.Lytvyn does not rule out the influence of foreign policy. "The fight for Ukraine continues, so political forces which pretend to defend Ukraine are supported by different means and on different levels," he stated. "Oddly to say, those who pretend to protect Ukraine, its statehood and national security, are actually taking the country to the lower level, to the stage of non-statehood." V.Lytvyn stressed that a divided country can not rise up to the current and future challenges.

"It is high time we understood that Ukraine should be not only an independent state, but also a civilized European country without extremism, xenophobia and hatred," the Head of the Parliament stated.
