Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, believes that the Law on Organic Production will make Ukraine more competitive in the global food market.
He made this statement, commenting upon the adoption of the Law "On Organic Production" (Reg. No. 7003) submitted by People´s Deputies M.Tomenko and Yu. Lytvyn. The Law guarantees rational use of soil, healthcare and protection of the environment, as it gives impetus to the organic production in Ukraine, arranges favourable conditions for production and consumption of organic produce, and forms a comprehensive system of organic sector development in Ukraine. The Law sets the principles of the governmental policy and the fundamentals of organic production; determines the authorities of administration bodies; fixes the general requirements for production, processing and sale of organic produce.
According to M.Tomenko, adoption of the Law drew a line under the long-lasting discussion of this topic. He stressed that Ukraine had legitimized environmentally-friendly organic production that does not use chemical and mineral fertilizers. The Deputy Chairman stressed that it was the first step forward for Ukraine to increase the scope of organic production and compete with countries in the global market. "The Government should develop a respective program and rules to boost organic production," stated M.Tomenko.
He declared that adoption of the Law is of vital importance, as it strengthens Ukraine´s position in the global food market.
