Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, informs the local authorities that childcare centers in cities and villages can be closed only by the consent of the territorial community.
Further to Podrobnosti TV program on Inter channel about the scheduled closing of two childcare centers in Zvenyhorodka town of Cherkasy region, M. Tomenko responded that such situation is rather surprising in view of a great demand for childcare centers and waiting lists to these establishments.
M. Tomenko considers this situation insensible, since the Law of Ukraine "On Pre-School Education" reads, "reorganization or liquidation of working municipal pre-school educational establishments and pre-school educational establishments set up by the former agricultural municipal and state-run enterprises is possible only by consent of the territorial community (general council) of the village, town, township or city given at the local referendum."
The Deputy Chairman of the Parliament appealed to the Prime Minister of Ukraine with a request to clarify the Government´s stance regarding the closure of pre-school educational establishments in Ukraine and Cherkasy region in particular.
