V. Sushkevych, Chairman of the Committee, emphasised that he latest official document the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities that was ratified by Ukraine on December 16 2009 and plan of actions of the Council of Europe regarding the persons with restricted physical capacities for 2006-2015 elucidate the problems of the persons with disabilities within the world space and suggest ways of solutions of such problems within the national level.
According to the Chairman of the Committee in Ukraine, as all round the world, there is a tendency of increasing quantity of persons with disabilities. Today in our state the figure comprises more than 2, 6 million.
Unfortunately, V. Sushkevych stressed that in Ukraine the problems of this category of citizens are being solved extremely inefficiently and very complicated. Today, people with disabilities are often isolated from the society and are object of different discrimination types, they do not have free access to the social services. The majority of the state and medical institutions, schools, pooling stations etc are not equipped with special ramps. Even is they are available, it is quite dangerous for the disabled to use them since they have been construed with no regard of building norms and standards.
V. Sushkevych also focused the attention on the problems of deaf people that face information barrier.
Ronald de Geuge, an architect of Van Aken Architects Company delivered the speech regarding the architectural innovations created for the persons with disabilities and are widely used in Netherlands.
