On Friday, Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman
of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine,
met Dimitris Christofias, President of the Republic of Cyprus, in the framework of the European Conference
of the Presidents of Parliaments.
Mr Christofias stated that Ukraine was among those countries that supported Cyprus in its intention to unite the country. He stressed that the countries established close relations; however "it is high time we boosted them."
Mr Lytvyn assured the President that "Cyprus can consider Ukraine as a good reliable friend." "We are consistent in our standpoint that the question of Cyprus shall be settled on the grounds of international regulations and resolutions. We believe that it is the only right way out", the Head of the Parliament stated.
Mr Lytvyn commented upon the positive development of economic bilateral relations. He stated that the President of Ukraine, the Government and the Parliament called for enhancing this development. Mr Lytvyn reminded that the Ukrainian Party had drafted corresponding agreements that were currently being scrutinized by the Cypriot Party. "We expect that these agreements will be eventually signed", the Head of the Parliament stated.
The President of the Republic of Cyprus stated that the Cypriot Party was thoroughly scrutinizing the documents, since it was willing "to implement all the declarations."
Mr Lytvyn declared that Ukraine was also willing to extend bilateral relations "in view of such an important factor as faith that unites the countries." "It is beyond any political calculations, because it is in the hearts of people living both in Cyprus, and in Ukraine", he declared.
