Mykola Tomenko, the Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine briefed that he had received the answers of the State Committee on Water Resources Policy of Ukraine on his appeal regarding the matters of Kyiv Water-Storage Basin drain that caused great loss of fish.

 

In particular, in the answer it was proved that taking into the consideration great snow cover in Dnipro basin, high water content and rapid development of the surface processes with the aim to accept flooding water, Interdepartmental Commission on investigation of work regimes of Dnipro water storage basins resolved to drain the water storage during February and first half of March.

 

Moreover, it was declared that Interdepartmental Commission tried to prevent mass loss of wish caused by ice pressing.

 

The Chairman of the State Committee on Water Resources Policy of Ukraine deems draining of Kyiv water storage basin may not caused great loss of wish because of ice pressing. According to his fish loss was caused by number of factor that coincided in time in the year 2010: long period of solid ice coverage on water storage and lack of air access and lack of practical actions on the part of fishing organizations to improve the existence conditions for fish resources during the winter period etc.

 

As it was informed by the mass media, the drain of the Kyiv water-storage basin caused great loss of fish in Kyiv region. According to the information supplied by the mass media, open joint stock company "Ukrhidroenerho" took the indicated measures to prevent the dangerous consequences of the spring flood. In the result of such measures, the water level in Kyiv water-storage basin was reduced to such a rate that the ice fall down and pressed fish to a basin floor. The mass media named one of the possible reasons for such actions of "Ukrhidroenerho". As it was briefed, the water level was reduced lest the numerous houses in Koncha-Zaspi regions are flooded because of the high water during spring.
