Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine stated that today the Law "On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine on Higher Education on Student Self-Government Matters" N 1798-VI came into force.

As the co-author of the Law, M.Tomenko addressed the leaders of the higher educational establishments and local self-government with the appeal to harmonize the student self-government organizational system through the secret ballot form.

M. Tomenko pointed out the attention of the higher educational institutions leaders on the fact that according to the law principles, only after the coordination with the student self-government body in the higher educational establishment it becomes possible to adopt the decision on expelling, rehabilitation and remove of the students; settling and removal from the hostel, appointing the deputy dean and pro-rector responsible for the work with the students etc.

The Law envisages the extension of authorities and functions of student self-government bodies, fixes the quota of student representation in the collegiate bodies of higher education establishments, specifies the issues concerning establishment and functioning of the student self-government bodies, forms and areas of their activity. According to the Law, the students self-government bodes receive 10% quota in the academic council of the higher educational establishment hence it facilitates the taking into the consideration the interests of students in the course of the adoption of divergent decisions in the educational institution.

As the implementation of the separate Law principles and clauses needs a relevant normative base, M. Tomenko addressed the Prime-Minister of Ukraine with the appeal to charge the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and Ministry of Finance of Ukraine with the elaboration and coordination of the necessary delegated legislation regarding the finance provision of the student self-government.
