"No statistics is capable of counting the millions of victims and mutilated lives due to Chornobyl disaster of 26 April 1986", - stated Oleksandr Lavrynovych, First Vice-Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, opening the parliamentary hearings "Current State and Topical Issues of overcoming the Chornobyl Disaster Aftermath".   

 

The First Vice-Chairman stated that the hearings were held "to analyze the complex of events taken to reduce the volume of radionuclides carried out of the alienation zone, strengthen and support the barriers of nuclear safety, withdraw Chornobyl nuclear power-station from exploitation, transform the "Ukryttia" object into an environmentally safe system, ensure further social, medical and psychological rehabilitation of the victims, conclude economic restoration and secure stable development of radioactively contaminated settlements and territories, elaborate relevant guidelines of the Ukrainian Parliament".
