Within the scope of the working visit to Brussels, Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, met Armand De Decker, President of the Senate of Belgium.

 

The Parties discussed their opinions concerning political situation in Ukraine, Ukrainian-Russian relations, European and Euro-Atlantic prospects of Ukraine.

 

V.Lytvyn stated that Ukraine considered Belgium as a key partner, "especially in view of the accomplishments of both States made towards enhancement of cooperation".

 

At the initiative of Armand De Decker, the Parties discussed a number of issues related to the European safety. V.Lytvyn announced that it was scheduled to hold a joint conference on the European safety in Kyiv this summer. It is envisaged that representatives of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of CIS Member-Countries, Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Western-European Union European Assembly of Safety and Security and The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.  

 

Dwelling upon the Euro-Atlantic prospects of Ukraine, V.Lytvyn stated that Ukrainian society failed to have a single opinion on this issue. Moreover, the majority of Ukrainians failed to support the ides of Ukraine´s accession to the NATO. "I am convinced that attitude of the people should be taken into account", - stressed the Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

 

The Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine also invited the parliamentary delegation of the Belgian Parliament to make a visit to Ukraine.
