Within the scope of the working visit to Brussels, Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, took part in the joint meeting of the Committee on International Affairs of European Parliament and Delegation of the European Parliament on the Liaison with Ukraine of the Committee on Parliamentary Cooperation Ukraine-EU.

 

In his speech, V.Lytvyn stressed the importance of Ukrainian Parliament in the current situation in Ukraine.

 

According to V.Lytvyn, since 1991 Ukraine "has been fulfilling two complicated, but interconnected tasks: on the one hand, the dismantling of the former Soviet system, and on the other hand construction of a new system of life organization".

 

V.Lytvyn is convinced that Ukrainian Parliament should "force Ukrainian authorities, all Ukrainian politicians to live due to the principles determined by the Constitution of Ukraine, secure its observance, predictability and stability of development of the country at least till January 2010 the date of presidential elections".

 

V.Lytvyn stressed that "European community should send a clear positive signal to the Ukrainian nation, signing the Agreement on Association".  

 

In his speech, V.Lytvyn also dwelled upon the energy safety in Europe.

 

The Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine answered numerous questions of European colleagues appertaining to the transparency of relations in the gas field, initiatives concerning enhancement of energy safety, prospects of development of the gas-transport system.
