The meeting was held in Tavria National University of V.I. Vernadsky (Simferopol). The Round Table was attended by the rectors and representatives of higher educational establishments of Crimean Autonomous Republic; Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv and Kherson regions.
The participants of the Round Table discussed the issues concerning enhancement of autonomy of the universities, significance of classical universities for the development of science and education in Ukraine, personnel training with account of regional demands, improvement of education quality, settlement of funding issues, and preservation of tuition by correspondence.
The participants dwelled upon the language issue, especially possibility of lecturing in the Russian language.
Adoption of a new Law on higher education is expected in the beginning of October 2008. It is necessary to secure legislative regulation of higher education, taking into account new challenges that faced Ukraine due to processes of European integration.
The Committee on Science and Education initiates holding of Round Tables in the regions of Ukraine in order to discuss a new version of the Law "On Higher Education".
