It is important for Ukraine to feel the support from the United States Congress in stopping the construction of Nord Stream-2. This was stated by Chairperson of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Dmytro Razumkov during the meeting with members of the Senate of the United States Congress Jeanne Shaheen, Rob Portman and Christopher Murphy.
"For us, Nord Stream 2 is not just an economic project. Ukraine is well aware of how it is used by the Russian Federation, which is doing everything to put pressure on other states. I am sure that the same mechanism can be applied to other countries," Dmytro Razumkov said.
According to him, sanctions are the most effective mechanism for stopping the construction of the gas pipeline.
Dmytro Razumkov reminded that on May 21, the Ukrainian Parliament adopted the Resolution "On the Address of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to the United States Congress to intensify efforts to strengthen energy security of Ukraine and Europe by imposing sanctions on the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline."
Dmytro Razumkov thanked the members of the Senate of the Congress for their constant support of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine for many years. He expressed gratitude both for international support and for support in implementing reforms and strengthening the defense capabilities of our country.
In addition, Dmitry Razumkov expressed hope that after overcoming the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, cooperation at the international level will return to normal rhythm.
During the meeting, the parties also discussed issues of reforms in our country. The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada noted that a lot has been done in this direction in the last two years.
"Because reforms are not needed by the United States or the EU, they are first and foremost needed by Ukraine. This is a key thing that we, my colleagues, and every official, that working in Ukraine, should remember," he stressed.
In turn, members of the Senate of the United States Congress reaffirmed their readiness to continue supporting Ukraine and noted that this visit is a demonstration of this position.
