The Verkhovna Rada is closely following the events in neighboring Belarus and this week plans to consider the draft Resolution No. 5560 on "Appeal to the United Nations, the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Governments and Parliaments all over the world to recognize the Lukashenko regime in Belarus as a threat to international security."
This was announced by Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Olena Kondratyuk during the Conciliation Council of Deputy Factions and Groups.
"I want to join this Resolution, in which the Ukrainian Parliament demands the authorities of the Republic of Belarus to stop the illegal persecution of the opposition, journalists, the immediate release of Roman Protasevich and other political prisoners," she said.
According to the Vice Speaker, the Verkhovna Rada also calls for increasing pressure on Belarus, including through the introduction of restrictive measures (sanctions) against members of the regime of Lukashenko. According to O. Kondratiuk, this Resolution should be considered and supported by the Verkhovna Rada as soon as possible on Tuesday, preferably by a constitutional majority. At the same time, calling on international and European organizations, Governments and Parliaments of the world to apply sanctions against the Lukashenko regime, Ukraine should set an example of such solidarity, the Vice Speaker is convinced.
"Therefore, we should ask the President and the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine to determine the list and urgently apply sanctions against supporters of the Lukashenko regime, as well as officials directly involved in acts of state terrorism, systematic human rights violations, harassment and imprisonment of journalists and politicians, opponents to the regime," Olena Kondratiuk stressed.
In addition, the Ukrainian authorities must protect the rights of Ukrainians residing in Belarus or planning to return home.
