The Verkhovna Rada is ready to consider the issue of ratification of the Istanbul Convention as soon as the official text of the document reaches the Parliament. This was stated by Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Olena Kondratiuk during a round table dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Istanbul Convention.
She stressed that the Istanbul Convention recognizes violence against women as discrimination and human rights violations. This document, in particular, for the first time introduced a comprehensive system of protection of women from domestic violence and real punishment of perpetrators.
The Vice Speaker reminded that the Verkhovna Rada plays a key role in Ukraine's European integration, fulfilling an important mission to adapt and bring Ukrainian legislation in line with European law. According to her, without this it is impossible to talk about any real changes in our society on the way to the European Union, the introduction of high European standards in all spheres of life.
According to Olena Kondratiuk, the leading role in the advocacy process of ratification of the Convention should also be played by the current authorities, namely: the President of Ukraine and the First Lady, the majority in Parliament, the Government, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Social Policy. The Vice Speaker also clarified that the Committee on Foreign Policy and Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation should play an important role too.
The Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada also thanked the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna and the Office of the Council of Europe for their joint efforts to coordinate the actions of the Government and Parliament for a positive solution to the ratification of the Istanbul Convention.
