The Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine held the online meeting with the former President of the European Parliament Pat Cox, MEP and Rapporteur on Ukraine Michael Gahler, representatives of the European Parliament's Directorate General for Foreign Affairs and the National Democratic Institute in Ukraine.
During the meeting they discussed the preparation for the next round of the Monet Dialogues, the recommendations of the European Parliament Resolution on the implementation of the Association Agreement of Ukraine for the Verkhovna Rada, the course of parliamentary reform.
“We are working on a new branding strategy of the Verkhovna Rada, which is being prepared by the working group headed by me. This program is called "Open Rada", and its purpose is to restore confidence in the Parliament through positive changes in the reputational component of the Verkhovna Rada," said Olena Kondratiuk during the meeting.
According to the Vice Speaker, an important component of the "Open Rada" is the adoption of the Code of Ethics of the MP.
Taking the opportunity, the Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada addressed Pat Cox and the participants of the meeting with a request to provide expert assistance in the development of the Code of Ethics based on the best European practices.
In turn, Pat Cox assured that the Ukrainian parliament can count on such assistance.
The Vice Speaker also informed her colleagues from the European Parliament about the issues of concern to the Ukrainian opposition in the Verkhovna Rada.
"First of all, it is the fact that bills prepared by a parliamentary minority are partly ignored by the majority and are not on the agenda. We also expect and make efforts to ensure that the status and rights of the opposition are enshrined and guaranteed at the level of law or amendments to the Rules of Procedure of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine," Olena Kondratiuk said.
At the same time, the participants of the meeting noted such positive changes in the reform of the Parliament as the launch of a 'touch button' to ensure personal voting. And also important changes in the work of the Verkhovna Rada, which are expected in the case of adoption in the second reading of the bill "On Parliamentary Service".
In addition, the Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada informed about legislative initiatives aimed at ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women and men in the formation of the parliamentary Committees.
"The call of the European Parliament to the Verkhovna Rada to ratify the Rome Statute and the Istanbul Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women is extremely relevant," Olena Kondratiuk stressed.
Finally, the parties agreed on the next meeting in Brussels to discuss further joint actions and the continuation of the Monet Dialogues.
