First Deputy Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk took part in the High-Level Discussion on Strengthening the Role of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The meeting was held in the framework of the EU-UNDP Parliamentary Reform Project.

The First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada stressed the importance of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals in order to achieve a better and more stable future.

“For Ukraine, the Sustainable Development Goals are ambitious aims that completely coincide with domestic national interests. Goals can become benchmarks for defining state strategic priorities,” Ruslan Stefanchuk stressed.

The participants of the meeting considered the best experience of the national parliaments of the European Union in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the possibility of its application in domestic practice, taking into account the peculiarities of the functioning of the Parliament of Ukraine.

According to Ruslan Stefanchuk, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals requires a comprehensive approach, cooperation between deputies, committees, the Government, business and experts in various fields. Cooperation in the President-Parliament-Government format should play a key role in this process.

Ruslan Stefanchuk noted the readiness of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the United Nations Development Program in Ukraine to provide expert and technical support in conducting Parliament's self-assessment to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. According to him, it is important for the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to plan legislative activities and ensure a comprehensive approach that will have a positive impact on the country's development.

The First Deputy Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine thanked the United Nations Development Program in Ukraine and the Delegation of the European Union for the permanent partnership, and expressed hope for further fruitful cooperation.
