An extraordinary plenary meeting of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine

359 parliamentarians have registered to attend another March 17 extraordinary meeting.


The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Dmytro Razumkov opened the extraordinary plenary session.

The event is convened on account of the President V.Zelenskyi’s demand (the letter No.01-01/204 dated March 16, 2020) and in accordance with part eight of Article 19 of the Verkhovna Rada’s rules of procedure.

MPs proceeded to the business of the day.

 

The current agenda:

1.A draft resolution No.3227 regarding giving parliament’s consent to appointing I.V. Venediktova as the Prosecutor General of Ukraine;

2.A draft resolution No.3226 to appoint I.R. Petrashko as the Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine.

 

The presiding officer announced that the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi attended the meeting.

  • Electing new prosecutor general

Parliamentarians switched over to the draft resolution No.3227 regarding giving parliament’s consent to appointing I.V. Venediktova as the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.

The President of Ukraine V.Zelenskyi presented Iryna Venediktova to the chamber. The President also stressed that it is for the first time in the history of independent Ukraine, that a woman might become the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.

Afterwards, Iryna Venediktova spoke about her vision of acting as Prosecutor General of Ukraine, having promised to be an independent and law-compliant public procurator. Among her first steps as the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, she called auditing cases and personnel and betterments in coordinating law enforcement agencies. The nominee fielded questions from the floor.

By 269 ayes, the parliament gave its consent to appoint Iryna Venediktova as the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.

  • Electing new economic development minister

Parliamentarians then proceeded to the draft resolution No.3226 regarding the appointment of I.R. Petrashko as the Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine.

The candidate (the PP “Servant of the People” faction) was presented by the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal. I.R. Petrashko then shared his vision of the current situation in Ukraine and shed light on his first steps in the new capacity.

By 243 assenting votes the Vekhovna Rada sanctioned the appointment of Ihor Petrashko as the Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine. The newly elected minister took his oath of office.

 

The presiding officer closed the extraordinary sitting of the parliament.
