The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Law "On amendments to certain laws of Ukraine in the field of nuclear energy use". 365 MPs voted in favour of this decision.
The law aims at harmonizing Ukrainian legislation with European requirements and standards in the field of nuclear energy use, establishing common basic safety standards for the protection of health of persons under occupational, medical radiation and the population against dangers arising from ionizing radiation.
Additionally, the purpose of the draft bill is taking into account the requirements for the state regulation of uranium ores management.
The law provides for:
· adjustment of nuclear and radiation safety issues aiming to reduce the risks of long-term exposure to radon gas products;
· adjustment of radiation protection issues in medical exposure; and
· improvement of the state regulation of extraction and processing of uranium ore and introduction of licensing procedures for uranium ore processing.
The draft law amended the laws of Ukraine "On nuclear energy use and radiation safety", "On licensing activities in the field of nuclear energy use", "On protection of humans from the impact of ionizing radiation", "On extraction and processing of uranium ores".
