The Parliamentary Human Rights Committee’s head met with the Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights

Today, the Head of the Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations Hryhorii Nemyria had a meeting with Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir (Iceland), the Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).

The parties talked over the human rights situation in Ukraine and bilateral cooperation between the committee and ODIHR. They also touched upon the rights and liberties of the Ukrainians who left in the Crimea and the occupied lands of Ukraine, as well as of the internally displaced persons. In this context, the committee head informed his vis-a-vis about importance to adhere to the human rights and freedoms in the above regions, having pointed out that the latter was being constantly violated there.

The committee head Hryhorii Nemyria made also a brief account of the law under the draft bill No.6240 on electoral rights for the internally displaced persons and other out-migrating categories of the population.

In turn, Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir stressed it was essential to stick to the rights and freedoms for all the citizens of the country, regardless of their place of abode.

Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir (Iceland), began her tenure as Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights on 19 July 2017, succeeding Michael Georg Link of Germany. Gisladottir has 35 years of leadership experience working on human rights, democratic governance and the rule of law at the international, national and local levels. Before taking up the position of ODIHR Director, she served from 2014 as Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia at UN Women, and Country Representative to Turkey. From 2011 to 2014 she was Country Representative of UN Women to Afghanistan. From 2007 to 2009, Gisladottir served as Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland. She was previously a Member of Parliament and Chairperson and Leader of the Social Democratic Alliance (2005 – 2009). Throughout her career, she has been involved in policy and development work in conflict and non-conflict countries, aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and human rights.
