The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada opened the festive meeting.
President Petro Poroshenko addressed the participants in the festive meeting.
Former president of Ukraine (1991-1994) Leonid Kravchuk reminded that the Ukrainian Parliament has taken many historic decisions that changed not only the image of Ukraine, but also facilitated the change of the Europe's and global image.
He also called for amending the Constitution of Ukraine in order to bring it in line with the strategic interests of the Ukrainian people.
Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of the II and V convocations Oleksandr Moroz said that the adoption of the Constitution is always a step having much in common with the declaration of state's independence.
Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Andrii Parubii also addressed the participants in the festive meeting. The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada noted that this day Ukraine celebrates the adoption of the Basic Law of the country and that a thousand years ago Ukraine already had the Law and followed it — the Ruska Pravda, the legal code of Kyiv Rus' and the subsequent Rus' principalities during the times of feudal division. It was written at the beginning of the 12th century and remade during many centuries. The basis of the Ruska Pravda, Pravda of Yaroslav the Wise was written at the beginning of the 11th century.
That Law was later spread from Ukraine far over the borders of the Ukraine-Rus, he said.
Andrii Parubii noted that since that very moment the Ukrainians had improved the Law.
According to the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, that Law was followed by the Lithuanian Statutes.
He reminded that the Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk or Pacts and Constitutions of Rights and Freedoms of the Zaporizhian Host was a 1710 constitutional document written by Hetman Pylyp Orlyk, a Cossack of Ukraine.
He said the United States adopted its Constitution in 1787 and the Russian Empire approved own Basic Law only in 1905.
Andrii Parubii considers that the Ukrainians have proved that the fight for freedom, for the right to live on own land following own laws leads to the victory — the independence of Ukraine.
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada recalled that on June 28, 1996, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Constitution of Ukraine. "We have restored our State and our Law. Then it took the parliamentarians 24 hours to adopt the Basic Law," he added.
The Chairperson of the Ukrainian Parliament said: "Our life must be worth our Law." He added that the Verkhovna Rada of current convocation has taken certain steps to implement the Articles of the Basic Law. "This Verkhovna Rada has adopted the laws to restore defense capacity of the Ukrainian army; the anticorruption laws; established the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office; established National Anticorruption Bureau; established new open police, etc.," Parubii said.
He also said that this Verkhovna Rada has adopted all the documents for the introduction of the visa-free regime between the European Union and Ukraine.
I believe that these walls will let us adopt the agreement on the ratification of the membership of the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Our Basic Law of Ukraine has a millennium-long history.
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada thanked all the attendees for their participation in the meeting.
Andrii Parubii closed the festive meeting.
