People's deputies have elaborated and adopted a number of legislative acts on renaming the city of Dnipropetrovsk and some other population centers in compliance with the Law of Ukraine "On condemnation of communist and national-socialist (nazi) regimes and ban on propaganda of their symbols."
Before taking that decision, the Verkhovna Rada Committee on State Building, Regional Policy and Local Self-Government had considered the proposals of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance on renaming of the population centers in order to bring their names in line with the Law of Ukraine "On condemnation of communist and national-socialist (nazi) regimes and ban on propaganda of their symbols." In particular, the specialists of the Institute said that the name of Dnipropetrovsk contains the name of Hryhorii Petrovskyi — a person involved in organization of the October Revolution of 1917, establishment of the soviet power, persecution of the fighters for independence in Ukraine in the XX century, organization of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine.
On May 19, 2016, a total of 247 people's deputies of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approved the Resolution "On renaming of city of Dnipropetrovsk of Dnipropetrovsk region." The city received the name of Dnipro.
Before the voting, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Andrii Parubii noted that Dnipro had become one of the centers of our resistance to Russian occupation.
On the same day, the people's deputies approved the resolutions "On renaming some population centers" and "On renaming some population centers and districts."
Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Andrii Parubii said there will never be a single Ukrainian population center bearing the names of former headsmen and killers of our grandparents and great grandparents.
