Statement by Chairperson of Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations Hryhorii Nemyria on International Day Against Homophobia

The statement reads:

"Today, on May 17, is the International Day Against Homophobia, which is another opportunity for Ukraine to demonstrate its strong commitment to the observance of human rights and non-discrimination on any ground.

According to the annual report of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Commissioner on Human Rights, at present the Ukrainian society remains biased to the members of the LGBT community, which is depicted in numerous cases of discrimination, disrespect to human dignity, freedom of expression and peaceful assembly as well as crimes on the ground of transphobic and homophobic intolerance.

I call upon all influential people to work towards overcoming these phenomena and make their best efforts for establishing a tolerant and inclusive society."
