During the discussion, the parties of the meeting took into account the fact that the town of Kremenets is a district center of the Ternopil oblast, economic and cultural area of the northern part of Ternopil oblast located 70 kilometers from the oblast center. In compliance with the results of the latest census, the population of the town is 22,000.
The leading industrial sectors of the town, both in terms of the production and the number of industrial personnel, are processing and food production. The largest industrial enterprises are CJSC Kremenetstsukor, CJSC Moloko, LLC Bekarai, CJSC Kremenets Chalk Plant, OJSC Kremenets Powder Metallurgy Plant, LLC Piramida, Kremenets VPRH, Kremenets REM, and OJSC Kremenetskhlib.
Kremenets is one of the oldest Ukrainian towns. The first reference to Kremenets in Old Slavic literature dates from 1227 when the city's ruler, Mstislav the Bold, defeated the Hungarian army of King Andrew II nearby. The city obtained Magdeburg rights in 1438. There are 65 architectural monuments on the territory of the town; of them eight are of national importance.
In 2003, such considerable number of monuments was the reason to establish the Kremenets-Pochayiv state historical and architectural reserve.
The town of Kremenets is the second ski center in Ukraine. There is a winter sports school there: ski jumping, jumping race, and sliding sport. There is also sole Ukrainian sledding track in the town.
The town of Kremenets has prospects as to the development of historical-enlightening, environmental and sport tourism.
Verkhovna Rada deputies took in account the fact that putting the town into the category of towns of oblast subordination would allow Kremenets to boosts its budget’s revenues, create new jobs, thereby ensuring financial and economic independence; better investment climate, which in turn, will facilitate the expansion of existing and construction of new facilities in major sectors of town production and development of tourism.
The issue of putting the town into the category of towns of oblast subordination has been agreed in compliance with the law, eyed and approved by the Kremenets town, Kremenets district, and Ternopil oblast councils.
The Committee has decided to recommend that the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine support the request of the Ternopil oblast council recommendation as to putting of Kremenets into the category of towns of oblast subordination via the adoption of respective draft resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine as a basis and on the whole. The draft resolution will later be submitted by people's deputies/members of the Committee as a result of consideration of the issue.
