At its September 3 meeting, the Committee discussed alternative draft laws: on amendments to the Criminal Code of Ukraine (re strengthening responsibility for domestic violence) (Reg. No. 4036а) and on amendments to the Criminal Code of Ukraine (re imposing criminal responsibility for crimes committed against family members) (Reg. No. 4036а-1).
During the discussion it was noted that domestic violence is one of the leading forms of violating several human rights (nearly 35% of grave violent crimes are committed within a family).
The Committee members stated that results of domestic violence, particularly the form of violence committed against women, are negatively reflected on physical and mental health of children.
In order to protect one of the most important institutes – the family institute – the bills suggest amending the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Following the results of the discussion, the Committee decided to recommend that the Verkhovna Rada adopt the draft law under Reg. No. 4036а-1 as a basis.
