The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Temporary Special Commission on elaboration of the new version of the law on development and use of languages in Ukraine will report to the Parliament on its work till March 30. This was announced by Chairman of the Commission, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Koshulynskyi when commenting on the Commission’s meeting of March 25.

According to him, a quorum at the meeting was constituted, and proposals were discussed in detail. “Now a discussion of the law’s “body” and amendments, that people’s deputies submitted or that are still being submitted, is held. These are just first steps in the discussion, and I hope that they will be maximally fast and efficient”, said the Deputy Chairman of the Parliament. He also thinks that norms of the bill will be widely discussed by the public.

“The draft document with amendments will be sent to the Venice Commission”, said R.Koshulynskyi.

Commenting on absence of some of the people’s deputies during the Commission’s meetings, R.Koshulynskyi noted that the Parliament will be suggested to consider the issue on “efficiency or non efficiency of the Commission’s work”, “in view of presence and absence of some of its members, there is no possibility to hold a full-fledged discussion.” “I will report to the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada and, possibly, address the people’s deputies with this proposal,” he added.

However, according to R.Koshulynskyi, the Commission still has time for work until March, 30, under the Resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. “Correspondingly, Commission’s work will continue until March 30. We will either finish or not the work in any form on March 30. Then, we will report to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on the state and quality of work of all members,” said R.Koshulynskyi.

He reminded that in the course of elaboration of a new version of the Law, the draft Law of Ukraine “On the Order of Use of Languages in Ukraine” was taken as a basis. The draft law was elaborated by the group of experts, under the chairmanship of Leonid Kravchuk. Though, this document is not ideal, it is the most compromise of all that were considered.

Commission will continue its work on March 27, this year.
