Acting President of Ukraine, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov met with Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman on Thursday.
In the course of the meeting, the Parties discussed current developments in Ukraine and illegal actions of the Russian Federation regarding annexation of the Crimean peninsula.
“This is not an aggression on the territory of a sovereign state – this is an overt attempt of annexation,” stressed Oleksandr Turchynov.
According to him, today, the issue is being decided on who is right: “Either Putin, saying that he has the right to ignore the opinion of the whole civilized world, or leading international countries will manage to prove vitality of global order and parity that was formed after the World War II.”
Thereat, the Parties agreed that such a conduct of the Russian Federation is not merely an
attempt to violate all international treaties, “this is a challenge to the
whole civilized world.” In her turn, Wendy Sherman stressed that the President of the USA, Congress, the State Department and all American people “support you and your country and all the reforms that you introduce.”
Apart from this, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs informed that America has already started imposing concrete sanctions on the Russian officials and financial institutions.
“We do our best to help you. And these are not merely words,” stressed Wendy Sherman.
The Parties discussed the issue of holding Presidential elections in Ukraine. “Elections should be held transparently and honestly in the established time limits,” noted Oleksandr Turchynov.
Chairman of the Parliament stressed that “people on Maidan have died for the future of their children, for decent life in the European, democratic and uncorrupted state.”
“We will do everything possible to protect our freedom,” he summed.
