Oleksandr Turchynov: European integration remains priority of our foreign and domestic policy

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, acting President of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov expresses gratitude to the Presidium of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Seimas of the Lithuanian Republic and Senate of the Republic of Poland for solidarity with Ukraine. He hopes that this meeting will strengthen relations between our countries.  

On Monday, opening meeting of the Assembly’s Presidium that involved Chairperson of the Seimas of the Lithuanian Republic Loreta Grauziniene and Marshal of the Senate of the Republic of Poland Bogdan Borusewicz, Oleksandr Turchynov emphasized that history of our relations testifies solidarity and reliable support of our country by the people of Lithuania and Poland, as well as their deputy corps.

He said that the Ukrainian state today “faces a challenge - its territorial integrity and sovereignty is at risk.” “We need efficient support of our friends,” stressed Chairman of the Parliament, expressing gratitude to the Senate of the Republic of Poland for the Resolution adopted, and Seimas of the Lithuanian Republic – for the Statement that supports Ukraine in counteracting aggressors.

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada also expressed gratitude to the parliaments of Poland and Lithuania for active actions in the European structures that aim at attaching attention of the European community to Ukraine in the current complicated situation. 

Apart from this, Oleksandr Turchynov stressed that European integration remains priority of our foreign and domestic policy. “The soonest possible signing of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement is the key task for today,” claimed Oleksandr Turchynov. “Signing of the Agreement and determination of Ukraine’s European prospects will be a decent response to Ukrainians that protected European values on Maidan,” he added.    

He believes that establishment of the free trade zone with the EU countries in the nearest time will be a significant impulse for the national economy of Ukraine and introduction of visa free regime between Ukraine, and the EU will be “of great importance to Ukrainians.”

According to the Chairman of the Parliament, with consideration of present political situation in Ukraine and its influence on security situation in Europe, the most topical as of now is intensifying contacts between specialized committees of the Verkhovna Rada, the Seimas of Lithuania and the Senate of Poland.  

He expressed belief that today’s Presidium meeting of the Trilateral Assembly will promote deepening of Ukrainian-Lithuanian-Polish relations in settling international problems.   

Following the results of the meeting, the Parties signed a joint statement.

During the briefing, based on the results of the Presidium meeting of the Assembly, L. Grauziniene and B. Borusewicz claimed their support to our country’s stand, its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.                               

Chairpersons of the Seimas of the Lithuanian Republic and the Senate of the Republic of Poland condemned Russian aggression against Ukraine, stressing that such actions are aimed “against the whole world, against peace in the world.”

Particularly, B. Borusewicz called such Russian aggression “fatal” not only for Ukraine but for the whole world, since this refers to violation of the existing borders.  

L. Grauziniene and B. Borusewicz expressed hope that Russian political forces and the society will find a way to stop the aggression.

L. Grauziniene also called Ukraine’s readiness to sign the EU Association Agreement “good news”.
