Members of the Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and International Relations met with the Chief of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission Manfred Profazi

Manfred Profazi noted that the IOM Mission in Ukraine “has experienced a long-lasting and fruitful cooperation with the Verkhovna Rada concerning the analysis and improvement of migration legislation.” According to him, activities of the IOM Mission aim at maximally increasing migration opportunities and minimizing problems caused by migration processes. Manfred Profazi stated also that today, as it was before, the Mission counteracts human trafficking, assists Ukrainian Government in fighting against irregular immigration and improving migration management system. It is also involved in developing health care state policy that would consider problems of migrants.    

Manfred Profazi said also that the IOM Mission is involved in studying and creation of legal employment channels for Ukrainian migrant workers, use of migration development potential and ethnic minorities’ integration, spread of migration-related information, etc.    

The Chairman of the Committee Valeriy Pastkan drew attention of the IOM Chief to the fact that migration and refugee issues, as well as provision of asylum in Ukraine and ethno-national policy are the top-priority areas of Committee’s activity. The people’s deputy stressed also that cooperation with the IOM Mission will promote development of Ukrainian legislation in the sphere of migration; increase social, economic and cultural benefits from migration processes; and mitigate their potentially negative effects.        

The Parties discussed possible ways of cooperation in bringing Ukrainian migration legislation in line with European standards. The members of the Committee showed their willingness for active cooperation with the IOM Mission.  

Members of the Committee Ivan Popesku, Bohdan Benyuk, Mustafa Dzhemiliev, Executive Assistant of the Mission Anastasiya Vynnychenko and manager of public relations Varvara Zhluktenko participated in the meeting.
