Asked about the local elections returns, Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, declared that there may be more falsifications during the final vote counting, than during the election campaign.
M. Tomenko stated that the Government suggested a new style of work: to form the regional and city councils and start working as soon as possible. However, M. Tomenko emphasised that "as soon as possible" was impossible, as the Law envisaged a certain procedure. He explained that the Law allocated several days for the publication of results, formation of the working groups by the regional and city councils, scrutiny of the issues on double employment and convocation of the constituent session. "Today, the attempts are made to avoid some stages in this process", the politician declared.
M. Tomenko claimed that in Smila town of Cherkasy region, two local deputies from the Batkivshchyna party Vasyl Latenko and Volodymyr Hroshev - were detained by the police, while the territorial election commission was blocked to revise the election returns. The local authorities were given a task to form the majority as soon as possible, so the latter wanted to show how they controlled the situation", he admitted.
M. Tomenko stated that the elections have not been finished, and there may originate even more problems than during the election campaign. "All of us should be interested in a civilized and democratic completion of the campaign, so that the local self-government can hold the constituent sessions in compliance with the Law", he declared.
