Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, believes that deputy corps elected on October 31, 2010, will become a constituent of the local executive authorities and settle their pragmatic issues.

"The analysis of the upper part of the election lists of the Party of Regions and other pro-authority parties shows that absolute majority is made up of the local executive power officials or the ones employed in the system of ministries and departments", M.Tomenko stated. "I can barely imagine how these deputies will fulfill their duties, protect the interests of the voters and control the activity of the local executive authorities."

The Deputy Chairman stated that amendments to the Law on the Local Elections changed the strength and the organization of the deputy corps of the local councils of the 6th convocation.

Thus, a total number of deputies of the local authorities will be cut down by 7908 persons to 225 578 persons. "However, the deputy corps is unevenly reduced depending on the level of government," M.Tomenko admitted. He informed that the cut-down mostly affected the number of deputies of the lower level of government, i.e. the deputies of the village, district and city district councils. The Deputy Chairman believes that it affects the importance of the local self-government.
