Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine calls for enhancing the prestige and the status of the libraries. He made this statement, meeting the personnel of the National Parliamentary Library in Kyiv on the occasion of the Ukrainian Libraries Day.

The Head of the Parliament deems necessary to replenish the library fund, install modern equipment in the libraries to copy the texts on the electronic media. Thus, the users would get access to the library funds for a nominal price, whereas the libraries would obtain extra income. V.Lytvyn regrets that the tradition of presenting a copy of every published book to the library is lost, while the purchase of books and periodicals has no financial support.

The Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine believes that the issue of social security of the library personnel is crucial, as "mainly women who are also responsible for their families" are currently working in these establishments.

V.Lytvyn stressed that these matters shall be settled. The Head of the Parliament presented the personnel of the National Parliamentary Library with valuable gifts.
